mxdwn PREMIERE: Golda Longs for Other People’s Lives on New Song “Wish I Was Someone Else”

Indie singer-songwriter Golda went through a tough spell around this time last year. “After watching my plans and dreams fail on a dramatic day last October, I developed a mysterious two month long itchy itchy itchy rash and ended up leaving my whole life in LA, my job, my house, everything,” she said. “I moved back home, my ego was gloriously bruised, and I was learning what it felt like to just exist again – no reporting to anyone, just waking up and living.”

Everyone’s heard of FOMO (fear of missing out), but what she was experiencing was something else, something that’s all too common in today’s social-media-dominated world. “I spent that time off comparing myself to everyone on Instagram who seemed to have everything working out for them, I felt so fucking awful and worthless,” she said.”

The result of these feelings netted a positive in the form of a new song called “Wish I Was Someone Else,” which is premiering here today. The song is built around a simple finger-picked acoustic guitar line with piano plinking delicately in the background. Golda’s voice is very captivating on the track, smooth and comforting with enough raspiness to give her a bit of an alternative edge. The lyrics “Closer, look in the mirror / I don’t know her / Now that I’m getting older it’s too late for starting over” speak to an anxiety many young people feel in their 20s and 30s, that they’ve committed to a certain life path and it’s too late to turn back and blaze a new trail.

“On a visit back to LA, I wrote this song with Christina Galligan & Ryan Linvill and we knew the day of it was really really special,” said Golda. “I’m in a much better place now and I’ve moved back to LA (happily) and I’m excited for what’s to come. But I have no idea and no control, and its all super TBD. That’s my new moto, TBD. Anyways, thanks to the ones that kept me going when I was in the fog, I can never thank you enough, you got me through it all.”

Golda grew up in San Diego and Chicago in a home where both parents spoke Russian. She later moved to Los Angeles and became a part of the pop-songwriting scene, though has turned her focus to her own music career. Her self-titled EP comes out today.
