Coldplay frontman Chris Martin announced that Coldpay will not be touring in support of their recent album Everyday Life, due to environmental concerns. The band will instead be performing two shows in the country of Jordan, which will both be broadcasted live to a global audience on YouTube. These two shows will take place in the city of Amman, and will take place this Friday, the release date of the album, during sunrise and sunset to reflect the two sides of the album.
“We’re not touring this album,” frontman Chris Martin told BBC News. “We’re taking time over the next year or two, to work out how our tour can not only be sustainable [but] how can it be actively beneficial.”
Due to this new goal, the band will postpone any touring for a few years as they figure out a way to make their tour sustainable and environmentally friendly. Their most recent A Head Full of Dreams Tour saw them stage 122 shows across five continents in 2016 and 2017.
“Our next tour will be the best possible version of a tour like that environmentally,” Martin said. “We would be disappointed if it’s not carbon neutral.”
The World Wildlife Foundation has praised the band’s new efforts, stating “”It is fantastic to see world-famous artists stepping up to protect the planet.”
“We all have a responsibility to lead by example in the face of this climate and nature crisis – inaction is not an option if we are to preserve our planet for future generations,” said Gareth Redmond-King, the organisation’s head of climate change.
