The Damon Albarn led band Gorillaz have announced a new film entitled Gorillaz: Reject False Icons, which will be screened at select theaters for one night only, on December 16. This new project is directed by Denholm Hewlett and released in partnership with Gorillaz Productions, Eleven, Trafalgar Releasing, and Warner Music Entertainment.
Gorillaz: Reject False Icons will document the recording of the group’s two most recent albums, Humanz and The Now Now, along with their subsequent tours. It is set to have a plethora of guest appearances from prominent artists such as Vince Staples, PUSHA-T, Jehnny Beth, Danny Brown, Kelela, Mavis Staples and Noel Gallagher.
Albarn reently reunited with his supergroup The Good, The Bad and The Queen, however the performer stated that he plans to release another Gorillaz album following that group’s reunion. “I have another one as well, but I know I’m not gonna be allowed to even think about recording or putting it out this year,” Albarn explained.
Prior to Humanz the band took a seven year hiatus from recording new music. This return took another stylistic shift, while maintaining their signature blend of genres.
“The last full-length record released by Gorillaz was in 2010 and, after listening to Humanz, it is understandable as to why it has been seven years since they have released an album,” mxdwn reviewer Lauren Doyle explained.”They took their time and let world events shape the message of the record. They brought in artists who would give life to these messages and, in the end, Humanz stands out as an emotional and political journey expressed by relevant and talented musicians.”
