A$AP Rocky’s arrest in Sweden earlier this year made its way to Donald Trump’s impeachment hearing, after David Holmes, who worked at the United States Embassy in Kiev, privately told investigators that he overheard a phone call on July 26 in which European Union ambassador Gordon Sondland and the president discussed the rapper’s arrest.
This incident made its way to the impeachment hearing due to the phone call’s subject matter regarding Sondland, Trump and Ukraine. The same call regarding the rapper’s arrest reportedly had Sondland telling the president that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “ ‘loves your ass. ” Trump’s dealings with the Ukrainian president are currently at the center of this impeachment hearing.
Meyers alleged that Sondland said A$AP Rocky “should have pled guilty,” to the assault charges, and that Trump should “let him get sentenced, play the racism card, give him a ticker-tape [parade] when he comes home.”
According to the Washington Post, Sondland stated in his written testimony that “We discussed A$AP Rocky,” in reference to the phone call between Trump and himself. His testimony earlier today however, took a slight change as Sondland stated “I think we primarily discussed A$AP Rocky.”
Trump involved himself in the A$AP Rocky situation after several people, including rapper Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian West lobbied him to take action. “Just spoke to @KanyeWest about his friend A$AP Rocky’s incarceration. I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!” Trump tweeted regarding the situation.
