Numerous artists have joined the 12-track New Hannukah + compilation album, featuring Jack Black, The Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo and Haim. This latest album will be produced by Randall Poster, and will be released digitally on November 22.
“When our old friend Randy Poster asked us to contribute to an album of Hanukkah songs he was putting together, we were kind of stumped. As non-practicing Jews (and non-Jews), truthfully the holiday has little meaning for us (that’s the meta joke behind Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah shows), but we were open to inspiration,” the band explained in a statement. “We thought maybe another friend, Sam Elwitt, could crack the code, and we think he did a fantastic job with his composition ‘Eight Candles.’”
Haim will be doing a cover of the Leonard Cohen classic, “If It Be Your Will,” featured on his 1984 album Various Positions. The group recently teamed up with their frequent collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson, for their “Now I’m In It,” music video.
Jack Black will be featured on two songs, “Chad Gadya,(Passover Bonus),” a cover of the traditional Passover folk song and “Oh Hannukah,” an English language cover of the traditional holiday song. Jack Black recently announced that he recorded a song with Jack White, the former frontman of the White Stripes.
Yo La Tengo will be covering “Eight Candles,” a pop song originally written by Cindy Paley in the late 1996.The band recently performed covers of Wire, Roky Erickson, The Kinks and others as their cover band alter-ego Condo Fucks.
