Experimental Swedish band Cult of Luna released an 18-minute short film (on November 11), featuring Swedish actor Jimmy Lindström. The film develops narrative over two music tracks, “Lay Your Head to Rest” and “The Silent Man” from their new album A Dawn to Fear.
Cult of Luna previously premiered half of the film in September. It’s the first time that the complete version was uploaded. If you could not get enough of the first half, then the second comes right on time.
Innovative, emotive and unsettling are only a few words to describe the film, because it’s more about an open interpretation for viewers this time. Rather than clearly demonstrate the subject of the story, the video is inclined to express a catharsis. Starting from an ocean, the scene captures a man who walks into a ropey condo that piles up his memory. His family was living in the house but all of them seemingly perished. The only way is to store the memory into a necklace. A necklace that carries his heavy emotion and holds him back as he enters to an afterlife. In the end, he embraces vulnerability and is seemingly set free, raging like a blaze of fire in the darkness.
Vocalist/guitarist and lead songwriter Johannes Persson expressed his excitement in a brief description of the video. He said, “because of the hard work that was put in by numerous people it deserves to be viewed in it’s intended form. That is why I’m excited that it’s finally available as the 18 min piece it was written as.”
According to a press on Cult of Luna’s official website, Persson is “too close to the record to objectively describe the sound of A Dawn To Fear,” But “Persson believes that it has a more organic feel to it, largely achieved through the use of organs and other acoustic instruments in place of electronic keyboards, and that it is perhaps a more melancholic collection.”
Album A Dawn to Fear arrives heavily for the first time in years. Cult of Luna’s last full-length, 2013’s Vertikal and their 2016 collaboration album with Julie Christmas, Mariner, both explored specific themes: one is about outer space, the other was inspired by the science fiction movie Metropolis. The new album, from production, to music and lyrics have enough mystery to leave the imagination of listeners stimulated. Check out the spooky film “a Dawn to Fear” below.
Cult of Luna announced their winter 2020 tour dates, which will be supported by Emma Ruth Rundle and Intronaut. This tour embarks in Dallas, Texas on February 25, and stops by major cities such as New York City, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles before ending in Mexico City.
