Cannabis Corpse – Nug So Vile

The band’s new album fulfills expectations

All of Richmond, Virginia metal band Cannabis Corpse’s previous albums are a great representation of what metal music is. They released their first album titled Blunted at Birth in 2006. In 2008 they released the album Tube of the Resinated, in 2009 they released an EP titled The Weeding and in 2011 the album Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shall Rise was released. Then, in 2014 the album From Wisdom to Baked was released and in 2017 the album Left Hand Press made its debut.

Now, Cannabis Corpse is back with a brand new album titled Nug So Vile. This album is rather unique because of how well the whole band performs together and how the musical structure blends in to match the theme on the album. Lead singer and bass guitarist Phillip ‘LandPhil’ Hall does a great job on this record because his vocals are filled with the sounds of a raspy grunge in an authoritative way and his bass guitar skills are clear and electrifying due to the low rumbles can be felt in the veins while listening, Lead guitarist Ray Suhy displays his guitar skills on the album and the music he creates contributes to the wild energy by providing each track with talented guitar music that will have listeners banging their heads. Also, rummer Josh ‘HallHammer’ Hall plays erratic and metal filled drum beats which help bring the energy to the whole album. This album is worth listening to because of how well Cannabis Corpse was able to compose a unique record.

On Nug So Vile there is a song titled “Edibles Autopsy” and what is unique about this song is how low key the musical structure is. HallHammer kicks off the song with steady drum beats before changing in tempo to the sound of erratic drumming, Shuy chimes in with a wicked guitar solo which contributes to the energy and what is rather unique is how both HallHammer and Shuy perform their musical solos together. The drumming and guitar blend in really well by creating cutting edge harmony. Right after the solos. LadPhil’s vocals fill the track with a low grunge singing style with some shrieking. Also, his bass guitar rocks the whole song because of the deep vibrations that can be heard rumbling in pure metal harmony. Overall, this track is wonderful due to the musical composition and Cannabis Corpse’s fans will not be disappointed while listening to this track.

The title song “Nug So Vile” is a great track because the sounds coming from the guitars help keep the music flowing with the metal sound listeners are yearning for. Suhy’s guitar skills are dynamic on this track because of how he is able to produce clear and wild guitar notes to help enhance the metal image in the song and LandPhil’s bass guitar is wonderful because when he is performing, the low rumbles become a sound of low high pitched thundering notes. The thundering coming from the bass leaves listeners feeling the thundering in their veins and ears. HallHammer’s drumming is simple and consistent on this track because, throughout the song, he plays low drum beats with a rapid kick and the rapid kick coming from his drums contributes to the energy the band wants people to feel while they are listening to the album. The music is great and the song can challenge listener’s to think about what the song means. Overall this song is great and the sounds from the guitars are filled with promising metal music.

Also the song “Cylinders of Madness” is a great song as it is pure heavy metal music. The guitars are blazing with erratic energy. Suhy does a fantastic job with performing fast-paced guitar riffs, LandPhil’s bass guitar skills show off on this track because he is playing at a faster pace and the sound coming from the guitar is wild because the low rumbles sound like a non-stop irregular heartbeat. Also, LandPhil’s vocals are raw with grunge filled harmony and a sound of authority. Meanwhile, HallHammer’s drumming style is great because he is able to play fast-paced drum beats with faster kicks. Also, his drumming on this track shows how talented he is as a musician and the musical structure from the drumming can contribute to the wildness of the song. This is an overall fantastic track and perhaps this song will sound even louder and prouder live.

Nug So Vile is a great record and fans will appreciate the taste of metal music they will experience when listening to the album.
