Dave Lombardo has announced his plans to score the film Los Ultimos Frikis, which will document the career of Cuban heavy metal band ZEUS who have been performing for 30 years. This film will be directed by Nicholas Brennan, who documented the band’s first native tour in Cuba, after decades of censorship.
“When Nick told me his vision for this documentary, I was immediately intrigued by the story because it could have been mine,” Lombardo stated. “When he asked me to score the film, I didn’t hesitate to accept. It couldn’t have been a more perfect match for my debut at a new form of musical expression.”
Lombardo, who is of Cuban descent has been a prominent figure in heavy metal and rock music performing with Suicidal Tendencies, The Misfits, Slayer and Dead Cross among many other groups for over 37 years. “I have been on a path of making music solely for myself and various bands for 37 years. This is for the people of my birthplace. This is for my blood and for healing,” Lombardo explained regarding the project.
Lombardo will be performing a unique style, blending in Cuban rhythms with his own signature heavy metal drumming as part of the band’s soundtrack. ZEUS’ entire career, from their beginnings in Havana, to their recent 30th anniversary tour in the city will be documented and explored in the film.
“Los Últimos Frikis is the culmination of a cross-border collaboration between Cuban and American filmmakers, musicians and artists who have worked together over the past decade to share this unheard story from Cuba with the world,” Brennan explained regarding the film. “It’s an important example for our current times of how collaboration and friendship can overcome our political differences.”
