South Carolina folk duo Shovels & Rope have announced their 2020 lineup for their annual High Water Festival, which is set to take place on North Charleston’s Riverfront Park from April 18 to April 19th. Headliners for this year’s lineup include Wilco, Nathaniel Rateliff, Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard and, as always Shovels & Rope.
Other prominent acts who are set to perform at the festival include Mavis Staples, Andrew Bird, the Drive-By Truckers, Sharon Van Etten, Rufus Wainwright, Strand Of Oaks, the Felice Brothers, Shannon & The Clams. Last year’s lineup featured headlining appearances from Shovels & Rope, Band Of Horses, and Brandi Carlile, and appearances from St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Shakey Graves, M. Ward and Hamilton Leithauser,
Shovels & Rope released their most recent album By Blood earlier this year. “The narrative and authentic lyrics can be relatable while still creating a beautiful compelling story,” Madeline Capozza explained in her review for mxdwn. “The intense personal themes throughout the album fluctuate, ranging from ghostly and provocative to gritty and raw. This album combines genres such as punk, rock and honky-tonk while still keeping the alternative indie style.”
Wilco is also coming off the recent release of their most recent album Ode To Joy. The band has also recently released a new music video for their track “Everyone Hides,” which was featured on the recent album.
Howard is also coming off the release of her debut album Jaime. “The lyrical content is what really makes the album tick. Howard details her upbringing as a mixed-race child in the South, losing the sister who taught her how to play music to cancer and learning how to love oneself and that ultimately is what pushes this album over the bar,” mxdwn reviewer Arnim Whisler explained.
