New York City composer and musician Annie Hart, best known for her work with the electronic trio Au Revoir Simone has announced a new album entitled A Softer Opening, which will be released on December 14th 2020. In anticipation for the album, Hart has released a new song entitled “Wilderness Hill,” along with an accompanying music video.
“Wilderness Hill,” is shot in a minimalist style, showing a shot of Hart singing outside a house, which is cut between shots of the ocean. The video closes with a tacking shot of the Wilderness Hill mentioned in the video. The song is also very minimal, featuring a simple guitar and piano chords, which are backed solely by Hart’s somber vocal performance.
“I wrote the bass guitar and piano in the day, and on my afternoon walk to think of lyrics, I noticed the street sign for Wilderness Hill and was overcome with this feeling of solitude and missing love across the Atlantic,” Hart explained in a recent statement. “That’s how I started thinking of the story behind the song that I echoed in the video. It’s about being in one place in one time zone and not being able to communicate with someone in another one far away. The thoughts of them, and the geographical or emotional distance that lies between you, rattle around inside you like an unshakable thirst.”
Hart released her debut album Impossible Accomplice back in 2017. This release was backed by the synth-pop infused single “Hard To Be Still.”
Au Revoir Simone is noted for its unique electronica and synth-pop sound, which has made the group lauded by indie music critics. Their most recent album Move In Spectrums was only released in 2013.
