Super Whatevr 11/7 @ Paramount

One of the best experiences you can have as a music listener is when a band you’ve been up on finally starts to break through. Sure, this can occasionally be a bad thing when they completely switch up their style for a more label approved pop sheen. But when they’re a hometown success story it’s a feeling that’s hard to beat. Anyone who’s been crawling around Los Angeles the last two years is finally getting their chance to capture the feeling with Super Whatevr.

Super Whatevr kicked off in their hometown in Orange County and has been on a meteoric rise ever since. Just last year they were headlining a small show at the Hi Hat but now are headed to the front stage of the Paramount. Given the genuine, unashamed songwriting it’s something delightful to see.

The first album the band released, Never Nothing was a bit more raw and visceral than their latest singles. Songs like “Bloomfield” and “Misqoute” practically jumped out of the groove, startling listeners with their refined songwriting that seems to have sprung up overnight – just take a listen to “Bloomfield” here for a sense of how well put together they sounded right out of the gate.

Recently they have set to working on a new album and have released two singles, “better.” and “i wanna be cool.” Each single expands on their previous work while subverting it with catchier hooks and a cooler, more relaxed vibe than they were previously working with. Luckily it seems to be working, which poises them for an audience explosion in the coming months. They’ve also released a video for “better” which you can check out below.

Their return to Southern California this Thursday is set to be one of the most impactful shows of the year. They may not have a sea of fans waiting for them but while we’ve been jamming out to the top 100, they’ve quietly been building a fanbase in person, and you can’t replace passion with numbers.
