These days the midwest success story seems to be occurring ever more infrequently. Gone are the days when some death metal band out of Denton, or from the middle of nowhere in Iowa, could set the world on fire. Now your success is so much more dependent upon your following, your social media presence, your persona, rather than on the quality of your music. This isn’t entirely new, but it used to be that your music itself could create a cult of personality, rather than you having to do the legwork outside of it. Luckily Poliça seems to have cracked part of the code, and is bringing a thesis statement to the Teragram Ballroom.

It’s no surprise that this show is taking place at the Teragram Ballroom. Over a number of articles we’ve described Teragram as the best punk rock venue in Los Angeles. But when they aren’t playing host to a punk rock band, they’re often providing a platform to some of the best and brightest artists in the United States.

That’s where Poliça enters. A synth pop band based out of Minneapolis, they’ve quickly earned accolades from a number of publications, including mxdwn, for their wonderful work on 2018’s Music for the Long Emergency. The band has also received support from Justin Vernon, who stated that “They’re the best band I’ve ever heard.” in an interview with Rolling Stone.

There is no guarantee that Poliça will be bigger than this one day. But there’s also no guarantee that they won’t. Regardless, it’s important that we all spend a little more time and effort supporting bands that are pushing style and genre forward. I can think of no better place to do this than the Teragram Ballroom.
