Jenny Hval has a penetrating voice set against various beats and harmonious rhythms which captivate you through her exploration of music. The Norwegian artist has announced North American tour dates through April 2020, along with her European shows in Paris, Berlin and the UK which extend through February 2020. She will then head out on a North American tour beginning with a show in Chicago, Illinois set for the Constellation on April 2, 2020 and then stop in Brooklyn, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, California along with a stop in Seattle, Washington on April 13, 2020 at Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall.
Recently, she released a new album, The Practice of Love which showcases various tracks that capture her peaceful and soothing nature. Her music has been described by The Ringer, “Hval has a knack for putting everyday phenomena under a warped microscope…Whether she’s tackling the algorithms of Spotify playlist culture, the false promises of late capitalism, or the empty commodification of self-care, listening to Hval’s music makes everything seem newly strange.”
Her new album, The Practice of Love was released via Sacred Bones. In a statement, the album is described as one that, “Considers the notion of intimacy from all sides as Hval uses the pop song format to attempt to make sense of what love and care actually mean — love as a practice, a calling, a vocation. The practice of love is the practice of language. The practice of language is the practice of magic. The practice of magic is the practice of love.”
In The Practice of Love, Hval’s lyrics brilliantly explore concepts of intimacy and desire, for others and for herself, over breakbeats and synthesizers. It’s modern, it’s mature and it’s delicately unique. The album includes tracks, “Lions,” “High Alice,” “Accident,” “Ashes to Ashes,” “Six Red Cannas” and “Thumbsucker.” The album is uniquely creative and dreamy. The Practice of Love was originally co-produced by Black Box Teater and Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, premiered September 20th, 2019.
