Green Day Played Dookie In Full To Celebrate Its 25th Anniversary

Green Day rocked Madrid yesterday (10/30), by performing the entirety of their 1994 breakout album Dookie in full, in celebration of the album’s 25th anniversary. This performance marked the first time since 2014 that the band performed the song “Chump,” and the first since 2013 that they’ve performed“Pulling Teeth,” “Sassafras Roots,” “Emenius Sleepus,” “In The End,” and hidden track “All By Myself.”

Dookie is one of the most influential records in the entire pop punk movement, which launched the group into the mainstream upon its release. A slew of successful singles such as “Basket Case,” “She,” “Longview,””Welcome TO Paradise,” and the 1990s MTV hit “When I Come Around,” spawned from the album, allowing the band to dominate the rock charts during an era dominated by grunge.

Armstrong recently reflected on the album in an interview with Rolling Stone, where he stated:

“Gosh. I was only 22. I had a kid at the same time, and I was married. So it was a crazy year. I remember being pretty freaked out. I was playing a kind of music that had never been on that kind of scale before. But what I really wanted to do was keep working, and keep writing songs. I never wanted to feel like I was taking advantage of the situation. I didn’t really stop and smell the roses. Later on, I was kind of like, ‘Did I enjoy myself enough? Was that fun?” ’cause the feeling of when you first get popular as a musician, that never happens twice. After that, you have to keep creating new stuff to keep things interesting in your life.”

After finishing the first part of the show, the band took an intermission and ventured into the latter half of their discography, which consisted of tracks mostly finished after American Idiot, with the notable exception of “Minority,” from their 2000 album Warning.

Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer are set to tour next year as part of the Hella Mega tour. They are also expected to perform at Rock Am Ring and Rock Am Park, which will also host the likes of System of a Down and the Deftones.
