Beach Goth 2019 is expected to take place tomorrow, but as a three-day concert at the Hollywood Palladium rather than a full-fledged festival event as seen in years past. This two-day concert will take place on October 31st to November 2nd and encourages attendees to wear costumes at the event, in support of the Halloween holiday.
Prevous years have featured expansive lineups which have the likes of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, James Blake, GWAR, The Voidz, Bon Iver, Future Islands and Butthole Surfers in previous years. The band underwent a fall tour earlier this year to coincide with their album release Natural Affair.
Despite its high profile lineups, the festival has had its fair share of issues throughout its seven year run as a multi-artist event. The 2016 edition of the event was plagued by issues stemming from the rain, a venue change and complaints made about security on social media.
The following year The Growlers, who host each Beach Goth event, briefly changed the name of the festival to The Growlers Six, due to legal issues with OCR, a group who owns the Santa Ana Observatory which held each Beach Goth from 2012 to 2016. The group eventually cemented their rights to the Beach Goth name in 2018, and held a festival at the LA State Historic Park.
“While everyone was glad to partake in Beach Goth yet again, lineup and location had a lot to live up to from last year’s Growlers Six production,” mxdwn reviewer Ilana Tel-Oren explained regarding the event. “The amount of dust and heat were a lot less bearable than the paved parking lot in San Pedro and waterfront breeze, not to mention that the event was in October last year and many more took the opportunity to dress up. Nonetheless, fans will look forward to hearing next year’s lineup, as The Growlers have proven that nothing can stop them from putting on a great festival.”
