Mike Patton and Jean-Claude Vannier have released a music video for “A Schoolgirl’s Day, “from their 2019 collaborative album Corpse Flower.This latest video took inspiration and footage from the classic 1962 cult horror film Carnival of Souls, and was directed by Nino Del Padre, who stated “It’s almost as if the film was created for this song.”
This video pays homage to the 1960s “scream queen” era of films, showing a titular blonde protagonist who is the main subject of the film’s horrors. VArious shots in black and white from the film are shown, displaying common tropes such as a woman in a bathroom, a priest and eerie dark shots.
Corpse Flower, blended Patton’s comedic lyricism with Vannier’s classical instrumental influences, blending elements of orchestral performances, hip hop and rock into one eclectic project. This project highlights both of the performer’s styles, without having them overshadow each other.
“I would send Mike rough versions of the songs to get his thoughts, then I’d wait impatiently, staring at the clock, until I received his response,” Vannier explained regarding the album’s recording. He made my music awaken with his unique perspective and interpretations of my songs. A formidable vocalist, with a sense of humor, Mike and I created a strong, beautiful and sincere collection of music, as well as a friendship.”
Prior to this release the duo dropped a NSFW video for “Chansons D’Amour.” The two also released the single “Browning,” as their follow-up single for the project, which also took a cinematic direction.
