Look, I know sometimes you feel like being weird. It’s something in all of our DNA. A voice that constantly whispers to us “social norms aren’t normal” the part that wants to give it all up, the house, the car, well maybe not the car, this is LA but you get it. Moon Hooch is here to indulge that specific subset of weird, they’ve been doing music their own way since 2010, and redefining jazz in the process. But if you told them about that second part, they probably wouldn’t care.
Moon Hooch is… how best to describe them. I guess I used the word Jazz earlier, that feels as good a starting point as any. They’re kind of a jazz electronic outfit who after banding together in 2010, burst onto the scene with their 2014 record This Is Cave Music. Their title was on point, it’s the kind of music that makes you want to revert back to your caveman days, living by the light of the fire and dancing to hoots, hollers, and rocks banged on cave walls. Each track of theirs is sheer madness, and chock full of energetic joy. But on top of that joy is an inherent love of experimentation. Given the rather stagnant nature of jazz as of late (at least in the public eye) Moon Hooch provides a fresh perspective that blends the best of popular electronic with the less artsy, more boisterous side of jazz. The resulting cacophony is something anyone could enjoy, whether they be an EDM obsessed frat bro or a modern day jazz fiend.
Of all the venues in Los Angeles, there’s a number at which Moon Hooch would have been happily at home, but even still the Moroccan lounge might be a match made in heaven. Owned by the same group that operates the excellent Teragram Ballroom, the Moroccan Lounge is a loud, vibrant venue that often gives a space to let the weird people be weird, and I’m sure that Moon Hooch will provide just that.
The show itself takes place on December 5th, and though that may sound far away I assure you it’s creeping up faster than you’d think. Make sure to grab tickets soon, or risk missing out on the wildest jazz show of your life.
