Often it doesn’t go unnoticed that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and performing covers for any specific artist’s body of work takes a unique skill to successfully pull it off. For French producer/songwriter/guitarist Olivier Libaux of Nouvelle Vague fame, he intends to continue to be up for the challenge to bring his latest musical offering covering American rock band, Queens of The Stone Age. The second installment for Uncovered Queens of The Stone Age, released back in 2013, is titled The Lost EP.
Experimentation seems to be prevalent with Libaux’s music. According to a press release, “The EP shifts through the hidden patterns of sound and mood from original Queens Of The Stone Age songs and flips the perspective, creating new vantage points and environments that come into their own. Featuring vocalist Charlotte Savay on the EP, the songs bend and shift like contorted rays of light hitting a broken mirror from all angles, casting a matrix of varying atmospheres.”
What is also very distinctive about Libaux’s take on Queens of the Stone Age’s music is his collaborations with women singing vocals for his renditions of original material. Libaux released 2013’s Uncovered Queens of The Stone Age, on his own label Music For Music Lovers, which featured Inara George of The Bird and The Bee singing vocals. Uncovered Queens of The Stone Age showcased an array of female voices with collaborations that included “…Inara George, Emiliana Torrini, Alela Diane, Skye/Morcheeba, Katharine Whalen (Squirrel Nut Zippers), Susan Dillane (Death In Vegas), Clare Manchon (Clare And The Reasons), Rosemary Standley (Moriarty), Ambrosia Parsley (Shivaree), Youn Sun Nah, and Gaby Moreno.”
As previously reported in the press release, Queens of The Stone Age’s “Sick, Sick” on The Lost EP sees Libaux in fine form as he “…crafts his songs from his Uncovered Queens of The Stone Age project to shift from a man’s interpretation to a woman’s interpretation as Charlotte Savay’s fluttering voice dances about with brimming female energy. While the original version is speed-intensive and full of passion and madness, Libaux became interested in shifting the mood, envisioning a mysterious nightclub where a woman (Charlotte Savary) wanders around in a hypnotic haze as her voice projects forward, guiding her towards the dreamy, dancefloor beat.”
