Los Angeles-based rock band Upset have just announced a new self-titled album, which will be released on November 22nd via Lauren Records. In addition to this album announcement, the band have debuted a new single entitled “Tried & True.”
Upset is composed of Vivian Girls’ Ali Koehler, Hole’s Patty Schemel, Slutever’s Nicole Snyder, and Benny The Jet Rodriguez’s Lauren Freeman, although Koehler and Schemel have been the group’s two most consistent members. The band’s most recent record 76 was released in 2015, while their debut She’s Gone was released back in 2013.
This latest hard hitting track features Koehler’s pop-punk esque vocal delivery, which are complimented by the band’s loud soft dynamics, reminiscent of many grunge era bands. The band stays true to this straightforward style, which makes a welcome return after their four year hiatus between their studio album releases, which can be shown in their chorus: “Slip a half under my tongue/ One half is never enough/ I feel it in my blood/ What a relief, a sweet release/ It’s tried and true.”
Koehler’s departure from Best Coast allowed the performer to regroup, and develop a musical project more true to the sound she was seeking to create. This led to an eclectic, yet honest fusion of grunge, pop punk and garage rock. “But this is “punk” in its truest form: a pure voice in simple forms, message before arrangement, words before music. It may not thrill you, but the sincerity is undeniable,” mxdwn reviewer Matthew Stolarz explained.
