Atlanta hip hop duo EarthGang have released a new short film for the track “Up,” from their debut album, Mirrorland, released last month via Dreamvmille/Interscope records. This new film was directed by Mac Grant & Chad Tennies, and stars its members Olu and WowGr8.
“Up,” begins with a young child entering a museum, and staring at an art piece. He then touches the art piece and gets sent into another, scary science fiction dimension, where the exhibits start coming to life. After running into the two performers, and going on some adventures through the museum, the boy receives the magical power to command people through dance, and ultimately defeat aliens who enter the museum.
This track was produced by VOU and Edsclusive, and features a reggae inspired beat and flow during the opening moments. Later on it adds more southern trap elements, with booming bass and synth lines, on top of its aggressive beat.
Olu described the main inspiration to be the 1970s era Michael Jackson film entitled The Wiz:
“The Wiz. We thought about how, if we’re going to make a project sonically to rival The Wiz, we got to create another world for people to imagine and go to. You know when Dorothy got swept away and she met the Munchkins? That was such a beautiful thing. You could see Quincy Jones on the piano, just playing away. That’s what “La La Challenge” is about. Right now, that’s the intro to the whole record. It’s really colorful. It’s really dangerous. It’s really trippy. It’s literally Freaknik Atlanta in the summertime—folks riding around in cars with big rims with paint on their faces.”
The group will make an appearance at ComplexCon, where Kid Cudi, Anderson. Paak are also set to perform on November 2nd to November 3rd in Long Beach, California. Other artists included on the lineup are YBN Crew, Rico Nasty, and Trap Manny.
