What happens when revered lyricist, Kanye West‘s imprint GOOD Music/Def Jam Recordings artist, Pusha T and highly talented Academy Award-nominated film composer/pianist, Nicholas Britell collaborate? In turn, fans of both can rejoice in listening to the latest Pusha T single titled “Puppets (Succession Remix)” a track that flexes its sophisticated poise and aggressive braggadocio bravado. The Virginia-native emcee Pusha T rhymes over Britell’s powerful score from the HBO series Succession, a show that centers around an overly affluent and greedy family in their day to day rat race that is their media conglomerate empire.
Previously reported on Consequence of Sound, “In the song, Pusha wrestles with the show’s core themes of power and wealth, insisting that his hands are tied and that any blame goes straight to the puppeteer.” Pusha T raps of excess and greed in regards to how money can be a tool for betrayal to the people who are suppose to be one’s closest allies. The lyrics suggests that the puppeteer has the most leverage when it comes to the pawns that are played like a game of chess. The most rich and powerful character in the aforementioned HBO series is Logan Roy (played devilishly by Brain Cox) and the pawns are often his own children, especially his oldest son Kendall Roy (played by Jeremy Strong). The Consequence of Sound article suggests the scenario in which Pusha T is in the perspective of Kendall Roy, “…fitting in the sense that both have an affinity for hip-hop.”
Pusha T recently boasted on his Twitter feed, where he posted a short video of the shows theme titles, saying “The soundtrack to my life.” Pusha T is currently working on his follow up to his critically acclaimed album, 2018’s Daytona.
