mxdwn PREMIERE: Whippoorwill Offer Life-Affirming Inspiration on New Song “California”

California symbolizes so much to so many people, both good and bad. For Alysia Kraft of Whippoorwill, it appears to be an inspiration for breaking from desperate circumstances. The folk-inflected song, which we’re premiering today, is full of gloriously powerful vocal takes, a mood-setting harmonica solo and a singalong chorus that will certainly improve anyone’s mood.

“As anthemic and self-affirming as this song feels now, I wrote it years before I’d finally be able to break free from the circumstances that inspired it,” said Kraft. “Sometimes desperation offers a moment of awareness – you can see the whole dark, spinning cycle and a single crack you might escape through. It was a rare alchemy of self-compassion, bravery, and desperation that manifested my courage to break out—and I hope this song inspires that feeling inside others who badly need a brave step in the other direction.”

Whippoorwill is an indie folk trio from Colorado. Kraft sings and plays guitar, joined by Staci Foster on guitar, banjo, harmonica and vocals, and Tobias Bank on drums and vocals. Their debut album The Nature of Storms will be released on November 15 as a self-released LP.
