The arrival of “Home with You” with its accompanying video is a blast. Following “Cellophane” and “Holy Terrain,” “Home with You” from the highly anticipated album, Magdalene, whisks between fuzzed-out R&B and ethereal pop. Magdalene is due out on November 8 via Young Turks.
Produced and co-written (with Ethan P. Flynn) by FKA Twigs, “Home with You” boasts her musical ideas in an elusive shape. The song reiterates an overt theme that refuge and peace are at home. The mention of “when I get my lessons learned/Apples, cherries, pain/Breath in, breath out, pain/No, no, novocaine/Still maintain my grace” is as close as the song gets to expressing Twigs’ strong spirits and endurance after overcoming a more or less recent health complication. Her tender vocals deliver, “I, didn’t know that you were lonely/If you’d have just told me I’d be home with you” as the last sung lines of the song. The song wraps up with muttering from Twigs, who urges that broken hearts heal and encourages herself to remain strong.
“You can take the girl out of the suburbs but you can’t take the suburbs out of the girl,” says FKA Twigs. “‘Home with You’ reinforced my reoccurring suspicion that when i’m in doubt, I should follow my gut and go home.”
By self-starring and self-directing, the London pop singer fully took the helm and presented an artsy visual work to accompany “Home with You.” The video, which shows a girl dressed in colorful costumes and surrounded by dazzling revelry finding a child image in herself, suggests that the way of going home and finding true-self is the way of healing. “Home with You” is a beautiful track that starts with a slow piano melody that gradually provokes emotion with help from distorted vocals from Twigs, a pounding bass and a strong kick drum, all elements in flux. It’s another single that showcases Twigs’ unique aesthetics.
With stunning filmmaking production and well-designed choreography, this is one of the more eye-catching releases for the visionary. “Home with You” is available on streaming platforms.
