Norah Jones and Mavis Staples new song, “I’ll Be Gone” is a beautiful collaboration filled with soulful, sweet and perfect harmony. The two are able to ride the song together, driving lyrics, “There’s a place, far from here. I’m gonna make it my home. It’s where I belong. When I get where I’m going, I’ll be gone. I’ll be gone.” The song is set against a piano, slow tempo drums and guitar. There voices do most of the heavy lifting here and mid-song the two hum in such a way that drives the song before it fades out with a soft piano.
On October 11, Staples and Jones (along with Katy Perry) will play a David Lynch Foundation benefit concert for 10,000 at-risk youth in the Washington D.C. district, “Silence The Violence”. The goal of the benefit concert is to help bring evidence based transcendental meditation techniques to various vulnerable communities in the D.C. district.
Staples celebrated her 80th birthday earlier this year with legendary musicians at the Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. In 2017 she released, If All I Was Was Black written and produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. She also released a new album, We Get By, which is a collection of songs written and produced by Ben Harper.
