A date has finally been set for R. Kelly’s sex crime trial in New York City, where the singer is accused of racketeering, kidnapping and sexual exploitation of a child. The performer’s Brooklyn court date is set to take place on May 18, 2020.
Kelly was also denied bailing at hearing today in New York City, which was done in response to a motion filed on behalf of Kelly, which claimed that the singer is not “presently receiving adequate medical care.” Prosecutors have also denied earlier suggestions that the singer was “broke,” citing a royalty check for almost $800,000 in April 2019 and another for almost $100,000 a few months later.
“The government’s investigation has revealed that earlier this year, the defendant redirected those funds into the bank account of a childhood friend,” prosecutors alleged at the hearing. “… His lack of candor with the court regarding his financial resources is another factor that counsels against release.”
Kelly has remained imprisoned since his arrest in Chicago Illinois, over two months ago, where prosecutors charged him with producing and receiving child pornography, and inducing minors to engage in sexual activity.
This is not the only federal trial that Kelly has scheduled for 2020, his federal trial in Chicago, Illinois will be held on Monday April 27, 2020, where he will face 13- counts of federal indictments, where he stands accused of sexually abusing minors and conspiring to obstruct justice.
In addition to these mounting charges, Kelly faces another 11 charges in Cook County, Illinois, and further child prostitution charges in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Kelly has plead not guilty to all charges in each of these cases, including the federal court cases which will be held next year.
