It’s been a couple years since Eliot Lipp has released an LP as a solo artist but he’s been steadily releasing solo singles and collaborations over that time. Today he is releasing new music in the form of “Pure Wilderness,” a song he created with the help of the brothers in MZG. We’re premiering the track, which naturally features samples of chirping birds and other sounds from the wilderness, along with a funky synth melody and just enough push and pull in the instrumentation that make it fit for the dance floor or the festival circuit.
“I was really pushing the melody before [MZG was] involved,” said Lipp about the collaboration. “I already had a synth melody going but it didn’t have the heaviness. They really brought the weight. There’s a little bit of tension in the drums and just like a heaviness to the bass. My music is always more laid back and more funky whereas they’re more into perfecting the sound design and making club music. So I had a focus on the melody but I didn’t have much energy in it and they took it to another level.”
The song began as an email collaboration between Lipp and MZG. After the remote collaboration, the three men took to the Colorado wilderness to add finishing touches to the track.
“Producing this track with Eliot was such a good time!” said MZG. “We were all on the same page throughout the entire process, especially with sound selection. ‘Pure Wilderness’ became the embodiment of our surroundings. A great portion of this track was produced at 10,000 feet elevation in the Colorado mountains! We are so pleased to share this with everyone.”
“I’ve always done collaborations in the studio with artists and although I have done a number of tracks over email, I prefer to be in the studio working because we just get so much more work done,” said Lipp. “We can test out so many more ideas and what works in such a short amount of time. Over email, we just keep remixing the same track over and over again. I’ve known those guys (MZG) for a long time, we get along really well so it’s always fun hanging out even if we’re not making music. Charles, one of the brothers in MZG, he did a remix for me once before and I actually put out a single of his on my record label years ago. We’ve done tours together; we toured the southeast together a couple times and done a couple other shows.”
For fans of Lipp who are eagerly awaiting his first solo full length since 2017 will have to wait a little longer, though there’ll be plenty of music coming from the producer in the coming months and years. Most excitingly of all, he’s said that he’ll team up with Blockhead again for another Lipphead release, this time a proper LP’s worth of songs.
“I’ve got a lot of music I’m working on,” he said. “I’m going to be releasing some more singles but I don’t have a plan for a full-length at the moment. So I’d have to say no. There’s a full-length on the way but I don’t want to rush it and I don’t want to fake it. I’ve got to have a concept that comes together and it’s got to be something I feel confident about. Right now it’s a whole bunch of ideas and a whole bunch of songs and a lot of collaborations. So that’s one thing I want to focus on. In November I have a song I made with Michael Menert and then I’ve got some more collaborations with a lot of other artists that I’ve looked up to including Blockhead, I’ll be doing a full-length with Blockhead – we put out a 7″ back in June, just two songs and in 2020 we’ll be doing a whole full-length of collabs we did together. But as far as the next Eliot Lipp solo record, I can’t say I have a plan for that.”
