Singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson has announced a set of several intimate shows, as part of his new fall 2019 Underplay Tour. Simpson will begin this small six date venture on the west coast, with shows in West Hollywood, San Francisco, and San Rafael, all in California, before heading out west to Brooklyn, Washington, D.C. and Asbury Park, New Jersey.
While Simpson has garnered a larger following during his past few years as a performer, the artist is choosing to forego larger venues for this upcoming tour, in favor of smaller, more intimate venues.
His upcoming album Sound & Fury, which will be accompanied by an anime film of the same title directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, will be released on Friday. Simpson originally unveiled this multi-media project at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego, California. Simpson went on to describe this record as his “heaviest,” and “most psychedelic,” project to date, and described it as a rock n’ roll record.
“We went in without any preconceived notions and came out with a really sleazy, steamy rock n roll record. It’s definitely my most psychedelic. And also my heaviest,” Simpson explained in a press release. “I had this idea that it’d be really cool to animate some of these songs, and we ended up with a futuristic, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, samurai film.”
