Legendary New York rapper Nas has released a new song entitled “War Against Love,” which is featured on the new rarities album The Lost Tapes 2. This sequel to the beloved 2002 compilation album The Lost Tapes was released on Mass Appeal Records on, which dropped his latest studio album release Nasir last year.
“War Against Love,” features smooth and jazzy production from DJ DAHI & DJ Khalil, which is complimented well by Nas’ signature flow and quick witted lyricism. The video juxtaposes many images of historical and contemporary African-American culture, with American culture such as mushroom clouds and blooming flowers, a photo of Olympic track star Wilma Rudolph crossing the finish line next to a Civil Rights-era snapshot of police chasing two black teenagers, and an illustration of Stevie Wonder next to the infamous police sketch of the unabomber Ted Kaczynski.
The description for the video’s YouTube page reads:
“With peaceful displays of humankind’s achievements and nature’s beauty paired with difficult scenes of man-made destruction, the message is clear; it is our duty to learn from humanity’s fraught history and move forward in the name of love.”
Nas has had a controversial year after the breakdown of his relationship with American singer-songwriter Kelis in 2018. The performer had accused the rapper of mental and physical abuse, which Nas has vehemently denied.
“Today I got a call from essence about my ex wife doing another sad fictitious story,” he explained in a social media post. “Everything with her is a plot and a scheme. Has no merit. No foundation… I didn’t want to speak up because I have real respect for our women. And definitely my son. I do not beat women.”
