Pop artist Tove Lo is changing it up on her latest single “Sweettalk My Heart,” which is featured on her upcoming album Sunshine Kitty, that will be out on Friday via Island Records. This new track takes more moody and emotional tone than her previous singles such as the upbeat “Jacques,” but lyrically similar to “Really Don’t Like U.”
“Sweettalk My Heart,” features dancehall inspired rhythms and a somber keyboard line which amplify the track’s mood and lyrical content. In this piece she discusses the difficulties in rejecting someone’s lovelorn advances, in fear of falling in love and the inevitable heartbreak that may follow.
The artist explains that her lyrical themes, while considered risque, are reflections of her life, and aren’t meant to glorify the drug use, sexuality and party culture that is present in her lyrics.
“I always found it funny,” Tove Lo explained in an interview with The Independent. “It started out like, ‘You’re this trashy party girl who is a bad influence – how does that feel?’ And then I would always get these questions about being body positive, being open about my sexuality, open about drug use, all that stuff, and I’m sitting there like, ‘OK, we’ll talk about that for two questions and then the rest would be about music’, but the headline would always be ‘Yes, I’ve done drugs’ or ‘Yes, I like my body’, or ‘Yes, I’m bisexual’ or whatever. I’ve just embraced it now. I wouldn’t want to change my expression or get rid of those sides of myself just because I’m frustrated with the narrative.”
