New York rapper Markel Scott, better known as Bishop Nehru has announced his first album My Disregarded Thoughts, which will be out on November 8th via his own label Nehruvia. In addition to this album announcement, Nehru has released a new music video and single entitled “In My Zone.”
“In My Zone,” features a familiar experimental hip hop and glitchy aesthetic, with a dark and brooding hip hop beat, in a style reminiscent of other rappers such as Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA. The video takes this aesthetic as well showing Bishop Nehru rapping under various blue lights, and glitchy screens in the background, highlighting his eclectic delivery style.
This track highlights a new found confidence for the rapper, who gained prominence at the age of 17 for his debut mixtape Nehruvia, and the 2012 single “Fickle Mind$” released when he was 16. These projects saw him attract the attention of prominent hip hop artists and producers such as MF Doom, Madlib and Nas. This new project slightly deviates from the early Jazz rap formula, as he gravitates toward a more experimental approach with his music. Last year he released Elevators Act 1 & 2.
“I came up with the title for this record before I’d even started making music,” says Bishop. “My Disregarded Thoughts was originally planned as the title of my first ever mixtape, but that never happened – the reason was, I wanted the project to be as eccentric as possible, but I needed to be in an artistically comfortable place to create that. Now I’m finally in that place, ten years later.”
