Renaissance man Mike Patton, singer/songwriter/music producer/film composer and multi-instrumentalist, along with seasoned French composer Jean-Claude Vannier have debuted an entrancing new single, “Browning.” A collaborative album from the two aforementioned artists is due out September 13th titled Corpse Flower via Ipecac Recordings.
“Browning” now available on various streaming services, is a track that has heavy cinematic/theatrical leanings. So much so, that Patton takes on a persona that tells a narrative that reads more like a character out of a hard-boiled detective film noir. With a cinematic backdrop that Vannier provides, it amplifies the story being told. As reported in Consequence of Sound the track retains, “…the sultriness of Serge Gainsbourg and the storytelling wit of Tom Waits, Patton takes on the persona of the titular character, Browning, for another darkly romantic tale. This is Patton at his most experimental and elegant, supplemented by the modern-classical stylings of Vannier’s sonic backdrop.”
This isn’t the first offering of familiar territory from the duo. As previously reported on mxdwn in regards to the track “Chansons D’Amour” Patton and Vannier are “Taking cues from the Shakespeare classic Hamlet, and a painting of the character of Ophelia, by Sir John Everett Millais, ‘Chansons D’Amour,’ adds a disturbing, yet hauntingly beautiful interpretation of the work.”
