Charli XCX, Clairo, Yaeji Debut Electro-Pop Single “February 2017”

Charli XCX just debuted her fifth single from her upcoming self-titled album, Charli. She teamed up with fellow singer-songwriter Clario and electro-pop artist Yaeji to bring fans, “February 2017.” Charli XCX is well known for her “I Love It” collaboration with Sweedish electro-funk group Icona Pop, but she has also seen massive success working with Iggy Azalea, singing the hook to her hit song, “Fancy.” On top of her countless collaborations, Charli XCX has also built an extensive record co-writing songs for other artists, including Selena Gomez’s “Same Old Love,” Blondie’s “Tonight” and most recently she had a hand in co-writing Shawn Mendes and Camilla Cabello’s smash hit “Senorita.” Her upcoming album will feature artists such as Lizzo and Sky Ferreira and is set to release on September 13th.

“February 2017” is the perfect blend between an electronic heavy song and modern pop style singing. This feel-good track takes you on a happy feeling electronic trip before the beat is abruptly cut with thirty seconds left in the song to transition into beautifully sung Korean lyrics. Yaeji is the one responsible for the feel-good sound, based in Queens, her work primarily consists of a blend between house-music and hip-hop with a trap feel embedded in. Yaeji gained internet fame when a video of her remix to Drake’s “Passionfruit” went viral, after a couple of successful releases she made her first major festival performance at the Coachella Music Festival in 2018.

Clairo is responsible for the other half of the collaboration. She credits her rise to fame to YouTube’s algorithm method as the star pretty much became an overnight YouTube sensation with her lo-fi produced song, “Pretty Girl.” Shortly after that Clairo signed a record-deal to New York-based independent label, FADER. She released her debut album Immunity in August, and to much commercial success, she was named an Up Next Artist in August 2019 by Apple music. Charli XCX, Clairo, and Yaeji’s collaboration together show the talent and strength that up and coming artists have in the ever-changing music industry.
