Sleater-Kinnery have released a new music video for “Can i Go On,” a single from their latest album release The Center Won’t Hold. This latest music video was directed by Ashley Connor stars Lauri Guzda and Mami Kimura.
This video was shot in black and white, and shows the two actresses as middle aged women in a suburban home, who strip down their clothes and dance to the songs tune before wrestling in mud at the end. The video’s themes discuss feelings of rage, entangled with politics, that follow the lyrics for the song, along with the aggressive tone the instrumentals take.
The Center Won’t Hold is the first album since the departure of former bandmate Janet Weiss earlier this year. St. Vincent served as the main producer behind this project, which was released last month, and topped the Bollboard Alternative album charts.
“Within the broader thematic context of The Center Won’t Hold album, we wanted the video to speak to an existence that has been fractured and frayed by age or by loss, by divisive politics, by trauma or depression,” Carrie Brownstein explained in a press release. “We aimed to showcase the female body as a place of resistance, to explore how much it can withstand trespass, sorrow, and chaos. The body, then, becomes a site of transformation, repurposing invisible wounds and wear into kinetic energy and power. The women in the video display modes of strength and joy in ways we do not traditionally see.”
