There aren’t a lot of artists with a story as unique and fascinating as that of rock musician Silicone Boone. Today he hails from Campbellsville, KY but he grew up in an Old Order Amish family. For those that aren’t aware of the sub-groups of the Amish, Old Order is the most traditional of the religious group, completely shunning the outside world. Today, we’re so excited to announce Silicone Boone’s first LP, a collection of songs called The Reaches. He’ll be releasing that album on November 8, 2019.
Silicone Boone grew up with no knowledge of the outside world and even when his family did leave the Amish for an isolated cabin in the remote Eastern Kentucky, he wasn’t allowed to listen to rock or pop music. Like an athlete that discovers a sport as a young adult only to suddenly and unexpectedly dominate, Silicone Boone’s lack of a rock ‘n roll upbringing didn’t stop him from excelling in the genre. This is the kind of release that grabs your attention from the opening notes and doesn’t let go. When he was able to explore the modern world, Silicone Boone discovered the writing of Carl Sagan, specifically his book Pale Blue Dot, which is a major source of thematic inspiration for the nine songs on The Reaches.
Along with the album announcement, Silicone Boone has also released a new song called “Found You.” Equal parts My Morning Jacket, The Flaming Lips and Polyphonic Spree, it’s an uplifting track that highlights the vocalists warbling Southern drawl with a massive wall of sound chorus complete with a children’s choir belting out the uplifting message “You’re not alone.” Take a listen to the song below.
“None of us want to be insignificant, but all of us know what it’s like to feel insignificant,” said Silicone Boone. “None of us want to be alone, but we know what it’s like. It’s interesting to me that if a person lingers under the stars for any length of time, they experience both of these emotions. So why don’t we walk away from star gazing depressed and anxious? Maybe it’s the scale of it all. We sense space holding up the reality of our insignificance like a giant drape in one hand but slyly reaching behind us and slipping another idea into our minds with its other hand. We intuitively know, when looking out on such a grand scale, that the possibilities approach infinity, and this includes the possibility (probability?) that other forms of conscious and intelligent life exist. Now, imagine getting to be the human to make that first contact. That’s what I wanted to write about. What would it feel like? We all long for connection and we all keenly fear and feel insignificance. Imagine blowing the doors off both of those things, forever, in a single moment.”
“We included children in the choir.” he said. “I wanted this to be a song for the ‘everyman.’ Of all the songs on the record, this one came the quickest and easiest. Typically songs take quite a bit of work for me, but I wrote all the verses in about 10-15 min and a day or two later when I sat down to take a crack at a chorus I wrote it in about 60 seconds. It was weird, kinda crazy. It’s like it just came out of the abyss fully formed and revealed itself to me.”
