English synth-pop group Hot Chip has released a music video for “Bath Full of Ecstasy”, the title track of their most recent full-length release, A Bath Full of Ecstasy. The project was released earlier this summer on June 21st to critical acclaim. A Bath Full of Ecstasy is the first time the group’s main members, Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Al Doyle, Owen Clarke, and Felix Martin have worked with outside producers (Philippe Zdar, and Rodaidh McDonald, in the case of this project). The only other music video the group has released for Ecstasy songs is “Spell“, which was released just last July, soon after the release of the new album.

This bold music video utilizes a few different unusual visual styles throughout its roughly four-and-a-half minute runtime. Director Oliver Payne manages to successfully cut back and forth between a Youtube review of an obscure Japanese video game called “Hot Chip: Bath Full of Ecstasy”, gameplay footage of the fictional retro arcade game, and cartoonish drawings of some of the lyrical content. The song follows the vocalists’ ruminations on the ecstasy that comes from a strong relationship as a couple’s fears and worries fall by the wayside and love becomes the focus. The electronic vocal manipulation throughout most of the song enhances the emotional impact, and pairs well with the varied twinkly and summery synths. With “Bath Full of Ecstasy”, Hot Chip managed to successfully engineer another absolutely gorgeous synth-pop love song.

Matthew Jordan: I grew up in Massachusetts, but I am currently a student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. I picked up my first musical instrument (viola) in the 3rd grade, and have been a fan of everything the medium has to offer ever since. Some of my favorite artists right now include Matt Maltese, Idles, MIKE, Benny the Butcher, Standing on the Corner, Built to Spill, and Frank Ocean. I also love following the charts and the music business to see what is connecting with listeners and why.
