Lizzo Lands First #1 Single with “Truth Hurts” Nearly Two Years After Its Release

Lizzo has earned her number 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for “Truth Hurts,” almost two years after its original release in 2017, becoming a sleeper hit following the release of her album Cuz I Love You. While this song was not featured on the album, it was featured as a bonus track for the deluxe edition.

This song knocked off Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s new song “Señorita,” which had previously taken the top from the Billie Eilish track “Bad Guy.”This feat makes Lizzo the sixth female rapper to top the chart after Cardi B, Iggy Azealea, Shawnna, Lil Kim, and Ms. Lauryn Hill.

Cuz I Love You was a massive success for the rapper, in both a critical and commercial sense, topping off at number 6 on the Billboard 200, while scoring an 82 on review aggregator Metacritic. The rapper’s unique persona and lyricism which highlights body positivity, free love and unique blends of trap and pop have made her a stand out among many female artists.

“It’s unfair for us to assume that people know how to love themselves … [corporations have] spent decades telling people they weren’t good enough and selling them an ideal of beauty,” Lizzo explained in an interview with the Guardian interview. “All of a sudden you’re selling them self-love? People don’t know how to love themselves, because they were trying to look like the motherfucker you were selling them!”

Earlier this year the rapper teamed up with legendary female MC Missy Elliott for the music video “Tempo.”
