Michael Kiwanuka has shared the lead single “You Ain’t the Problem” from his anticipated new album Kiwanuka. The groovy new track boasts a mix of drums and horns, leaving fans wanting more. According to Rolling Stone, Kiwanuka worked with longtime collaborators Danger Mouse and Inflo, who also worked on his 2016 album Love & Hate.
Kiwanuka discussed the new album, saying “This one is more about feeling comfortable in who I am and asking what I want to say. Like, how could I be bold and challenge myself and the listener? It is about self-acceptance in a more triumphant rather than melancholy way. It’s an album that explores what it means to be a human being today.”
He continued on to say “…So, on this album it’s kind of a defiant thing; I’m engaging with who I am and I’m not going to have an alter ego, or become Sasha Fierce or Ziggy Stardust, even though everyone’s telling me I need to be this, that or the other. I can just be Michael Kiwanuka.”
Kiwanuka will also be playing select shows with Gary Clark Jr., all hailing on the west coast. The three back-to-back shows will start in Santa Barbara Sept. 27, following a show at the Greek Theatre in Berkely, CA Sept. 28 and at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA Sept. 29.
