Redd Kross conveys a conviction to always evolve and reshape the sound of their music in order to further their place in Southern California’s underground rock scene. This sentiment can be felt in the band’s latest offering, Beyond The Door, Kross’ 7th studio album, which was released Friday, August 23rd, via Merge Records. Redd Kross’ latest music video is a vibrant trip through the collective mind of a group whose longevity spans forty years.
“Beyond The Door” is the latest single that shares the same name as the aforementioned latest album by Redd Kross. The video opens up with an image of a door cracked open revealing red and blue strobe lights as warped music and crackling fire sounds can be heard in the background. On the other side of the door, there is a brief reoccurring image of what appears to be a fortune teller with a crystal ball. The band also comes into view with the full current lineup that includes: brothers Jeff (lead singer) and Steve (bass guitarist) McDonald, Dale Crover (drummer of Melvins fame) and Jason Shapiro (lead guitarist).
The indie punk vibe is definitely prevalent in the video and in their current music. It is a rejuvenating quality that the band flourishes in. For a group that started in the early 1980’s it is route that they would follow in the footsteps of their commercially viable contemporaries. Yet it is the band’s attitude to not reinvent the wheel, but rather take that wheel and see a new facet of its original use. According to an article in Flood Magazine, Jeff states, “We like that excitement, that electricity of the underground scene. As a fan and follower of music, when someone’s got something brand new and you’re seeing it congeal for the first time, we can feel it. It’s palpable. We’d rather be there. If you want to remain relevant, you have to keep doing it. You have to keep moving. Resting on your laurels is the kiss of death in any art form.”
