An absence from the limelight can be a heavy industry burden on various artists. The lack of readily releasing any material during a hiatus can leave the audience with a sour taste. There are a plethora of reasons that artists choose not to release a project that can range from perfectionism to in house differences especially amongst groups. Names that come to mind are West Coast gangsta rap pioneer producer/business mogul Dr. Dre and the illustrious rock group Guns N’ Roses, who have overcome lapses of releasing new material. For the American Rock band Tool, it has been a total of thirteen years since the group released their last studio album, 10,000 Days.
This isn’t to say frontman Maynard James Keenan hasn’t been busy pursuing other ventures which includes his wine business and releasing two albums, A Perfect Circle and Puscifier, according to a recent The PRP article. Some fans resorted to speak critically through memes and venting over various areas of internet forums, singling Keenan as the prime culprit to why there hasn’t been a new Tool album. The article went on to relay that various components including legal matters and creative struggles amongst the band is to blame. As a whole, the band has come to Keenan’s defense and as drummer Dany Carrey explains in a latest issue in Metal Hammer:
“I felt bad for him [Keenan], and he even told me he was getting death threats from these idiots out there. They just have no idea what our work ethic is. These things don’t happen, man. There’s no other record that’s going to sound like this Tool record. What you hear is what you get, and what you get is what it takes to get it done. And it’s not an easy process.”
The article goes on to explain that second guessing during the long sessions of the writing process over the years, following up to the release of the forthcoming studio album Fear Inoculum, was also a factor. Their latest single, of the album’s same name, is proof that there is more that Tool has to say. As previously reported on mxdwn.com Fear Inoculum is the first 10 minute song to make the Billboard Top 100. The album is scheduled to be released August 30th, 2019.
