Newly formed Country Music supergroup, The Highwomen, release a self titled single “Highwomen” off their forthcoming eponymous debut album. The powerhouse ensemble consists of successfully established female country singer/songwriters: Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Natalie Hemby and Maren Morris. Their name is a play on the original all male outfit The Highwaymen that consisted of the legendary Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.
Their latest explosively passionate track “Highwomen” is a frontier tale. It can be described as a dubiously ambitious undertaking of rewriting the original The Highwaymen signature song. The original songwriter Jimmy Webb, who gave them his blessings for the latest track, also helped co-write the re-worked current version. According to a Rolling Stone article, “Carlile takes the verse about the Honduran immigrant, Shires inhabits the persecuted doctor, Hemby sings about being a preacher, and U.K. songwriter Yola guests to tackle the verse about the freedom rider. Sheryl Crow also appears on the track as a background vocalist…”. The track screams women empowerment and the sentiment can be felt by the emotionally encompassing production. The group premiered the song on Apple Music’s Beats 1.
In a short period of time the group have been creating legitimately major buzz. As previously reported on mxdwn.com their inception was created by Brandi Carlile and Amanda Shires. The group’s first lineup was suppose to include Margo Price which is still in talks to work with Shires elsewhere, “Initially, Shires had indicated that the band would include rising country star Margo Price in its ranks. While it appears she may have spoke too soon on that front, the newest members of the band aren’t exactly a letdown either.” The first song which included the rest of the official members was “Redesigning Women”.
Other contributions from the group is their recording of Fleetwood Mac’s classic “The Chain”. The track was featured in the major motion picture “The Kitchen” which stars Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Elizabeth Moss as previously reported on mxdwn.com. Their self titled album is set to be released September 6.
