American Alternative Rock group Death Cab For Cutie returns with new music from their upcoming new project, The Blue EP. A couple of tracks have been released from the five song project, “Kids in ’99” and “To The Ground”. The latter lends a more cinematic approach with a progression of moody guitar chords that open the track, quickly following some smooth drums. The new material is the group’s follow up to last year’s Thank You for Today their ninth studio album.
The song “To The Ground” breaks away from some of the more indie pop elements the group explored on their last album. More akin to their earlier work, this seems like a sample of a more traditional sound that their core audience is use to. The production is a lot more heavy hitting which sounds promising as it is the opening track to The Blue EP, which is scheduled to be released September 6.
“To The Ground” differs from the straightforward concept song “Kids in ’99” which leans more towards a political activism “tribute to the three children who died in 1999 from the Olympic Pipeline explosion in Bellingham, Washington” according to a July 30th, 2019 Pitchfork article. This hits closer to home for the group being that the incident took place from their hometown. Later in the article, lead singer Ben Gibbard went on to say, “After all these years I felt it was worthy of its own folk song.”
Most recently the group collaborated with Chicago rapper, Chance The Rapper for his debut album The Big Day. They were featured on the hook for the track “Do You Remember”, as reported last month on mxdwn.com.
