Belle & Sebastian held a five-day event, The Boaty Weekender, from August 8– 12, 2019 aboard the Norwegian Jade. The music event took place in a cruise ship sailing from Barcelona to Cagliari, Sardinia. Curated by Belle & Sebastian, the event across five stages wrapped up with a series of highly anticipated performances, featuring Alvvays, Mogwai, Yo La Tengo, Camera Obscura (who are back!), Django Django, The Buzzcocks, Japanese Breakfast, Honeyblood, Hinds, Kelly Lee Owens, Nilüfer Yanya, Whyte Horses, Tracyanne And Danny.
Co-founder, Pete Shelley, from The Buzzcocks passed away in last December. According to Brooklyn Vegan, in order to fill the gap, bandmate Steve Diggle took over the vocal duty and became the lead singer in their first gig at Boaty Weekender on August 9. On August 10, Alvvays, Mogwai and Yo La Tengo joined “Buzzcocks & Friends” set, which is The Buzzcocks’ second gig at Boaty Weekender. The performance was dedicated to paying tribute to Shelley. Canadian indie-pop quintet released their last album Antisocialites in 2017. Alvvays announced U.S tour in support of the album last year, including an open show for The War on Drugs’ Hollywood Bowl debut. It was the fifth of six shows for KCRW’s World Festival at the Hollywood Bowl.
Scottish post-rock band released original soundtrack KIN OST for the feature film KIN in last August. Their most recent gig will be performed in Psycho Las Vegas 2019, which will be held between August 16 and 18. After that, their summer 2019 Tour is about to start. Their brief 8-stop-tour embarks on August 19 at Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix, AZ, before wrapping up on August 29 at Ace Of Spades in Sacramento, CA. Check out the tour dates here. Mogwai will join OctFest 2019 alongside with Metz and Screaming Females on October 19.
Indie rock bands Yo La Tengo recently performed an entire live set at Union Pool in Brooklyn, New York on August 4th. During the gig, the band performed as their alter ego cover band, Condo Fucks. The band’s most recent full-length project, There’s A Riot Going On, was released last year, check out our review here. Last year, Yo La Tengo also performed in OctFest 2018 on Governor’s Island in New York City and an eight-night Hanukkah residency at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan.
Belle & Sebastian’s last release is an uplifting song “We Were Beautiful, ”which is also their first new music in 2 years, since 2015’s Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance. Belle & Sebastian recently announced new original soundtrack for the film Days of the Bagnold Summer. The soundtrack is set to out on September 13 via Matador Records.
