Influential alternative rock/grunge band Mudhoney have announced their next EP, Morning in America. The EP will be released on September 20th by Sub Pop. This 7-track project is made up of tracks recorded during the sessions for the group’s most recent full-length release, Digital Garbage. Morning in America includes cuts like “Let’s Kill Yourself Live Again”, a re-work of “Let’s Kill Yourself Live” from Digital Garbage, album outtake and namesake “Morning in America”, and more. The EP was mixed at Crackle and Pop! in Mudhoney’s home city Seattle, and the release will coincide with the band’s fall US tour.
Mudhoney released the lead single, “One Bad Actor”, along with the announcement of the EP. “One Bad Actor” is a new version of the band’s track from their recently released (and now sold out) split 7″ single with with post-hardcore band Hot Snakes.
Right off the bat, the electronic warbles and heavy synth that kick off “One Bad Actor” make the song sound like a departure from the band’s usual sound, but as soon as the drums come in, it’s back to what they know best. While the vocals and drums feel a bit more crisp than usual, the band’s grungy sound remains mostly intact on this track, especially in the still noticeably distorted guitar. The charming and tongue-in-cheek lyrical style found in Mudhoney’s underground hits like “Touch Me I’m Sick” is still present on this song, with memorable moments like, “Shakespeare is a square / Shakespeare is a square / Shakespeare is dead / Like his stupid language”.
