Jay Som Discovers an Extraterrestrial’s Love of the Hula Hoop in New Video for “Nighttime Drive”

Jay Som has released an out of this world new video for her song “Nighttime Drive,” the latest preview of her highly-anticipated new album Anak Ko. The album is her second proper release (following a debut of early demos called Turn Into) and the follow-up to her Polyvinyl-released breakthrough Everybody Works in 2017. “Nighttime Drive” is preceded by singles “Superbike” and “Tenderness” – Anak Ko is available on August 23.

The video for “Nighttime Drive,” which was directed by Han Hale, opens with the band en route to a show on tour, five individuals crammed into the front of a van. Jay Som is fast asleep on the passenger side and her dreams take the viewer on a wild, X-Files inspired ride featuring a dancing, hula-hooping alien. The song itself is exactly what you’d expect from the (newly) Los Angeles-based bedroom pop artist, opening with gently strummed acoustic guitars and her soft and sweet vocals.

The song is about getting stronger from being on the road, a place that Jay Som’s spent a great deal of time over the last two years since she became an alternative-music darling nearly overnight. Lyrics like “We’re leaving town tomorrow / It’s only for the memories / So used to feeling numb” seem to be a sentiment that can be related to by just about every touring musician. The song concludes with a lush orchestral section, during which an otherworldly entity shows off some killer dance moves.

Jay Som will be on tour throughout the next few months. She’ll play the West Coast initially before hitting the rest of the country and then the United Kingdom and Europe in October and November. Her band will be supported by opening acts Boy Scouts, Affectionately and Gia Margaret.
