UK electronic music producer James Blake has released a new music video for “Can’t Believe The Way We Flow,” off of his latest studio album release Assume Form. This music video was directed by Frank Lebon, who has worked with A$AP Rocky, Skepta and FKA Twigs, was shot over 6 days in London and uses 30 real life couples to show the facets of many different romantic relationships.
Like many other songs off of Assume Form, this track takes a new more upbeat approach to Blake’s music, which usually took a more somber tone. The music video takes a rapid fire approach, with scenes being quickly cut between each other throughout the video.
“There was a moment where I started working on some other projects and found myself a little bit in no man’s land with a bunch of music I was sitting on. I didn’t have the energy to finish it because I was working for or with so many other people, and I felt like I was wasting my time in areas where it wasn’t coming to fruition,” Blake explained in an interview with The Fader.”Then, I had a moment of realization when I was at San Francisco’s Treasure Island festival. I looked out and it was such an amazing, large crowd. I went, Oh yeah. I have my own thing. I realized there was power in taking control of my own music for a second. Then, Assume Form came together quite quickly — over a couple of months.”
He also elaborated that although he’s in a more positive head-space, his creative process is still just as time consuming.
“Being a producer, lines blur where you can be working long hours and you’re just hanging out. You end up giving a lot of yourself,” he elaborated further in the interview. “I’ve worked with producers who give everything to a project and don’t have a lot left for themselves personally, and I’ve worked with people who clock in at 12 o’clock, clock out at seven on the dot, every day. Rick [Rubin]’s a good example of that. The creative process can be quite consuming.”
