2019 has been a roller coaster year for the rapper Big Sean. After ending things with longtime girlfriend and fellow musician Jhene Aiko back in March, Big Sean has remained mostly silent for a good part of the year. Spending his time and focus on putting more effort into himself and getting back into the mind frame of having fun. With his new freestyle, “Overtime,” he gives off that exact vibe. This track embodies Big Sean’s comeback spirit with an aggressive 808 and intelligently packed lyrics. His creativity bleeds through in more than just his lyricism, halfway through the song the instrumental makes a dramatic change to a more uplifting feel, yet his flow remains strong. This song is the perfect representation of the Don lifestyle that Big Sean lives.
Big Sean’s fifth studio album, Don Life, was announced along with the song drop. However, no official release date has been set. Big Sean’s last two albums were certified platinum, as well as peaking at number one on the Billboard 200. His last album, I, Decided, had hits like “Bounce Back,” “No Favors,” and “Jump out the Winow,” with “Bounce Back” going 4x platinum. The rapper had to cancel his Unfriendly Reminder Tour last year because of his focus in the studio. Stating that he was “in a deep creative space and needed to stay focused in the studio.” Which can only mean that Big Sean has big things planned for his new album, Don Life.
Big Sean’s genius ability to freestyle with ease is one thing that sets him apart from his peers. ‘Conditioned to go the distance’ is one lyric from this song that proves his ability to persevere and remain strong when the going gets tough. Big Sean has one of his only performances of the year coming up at The Real Street Festival on August 10th and 11th in Anaheim. If his performance is anything like his ‘I’m back and better than ever’ attitude on this track, then Big Sean’s ‘Overtime’ freestyle was just the beginning.
