Los Angeles based musical group Haim headlined the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and blew the crowd away with their rendition of the iconic Paula Cole classics “I Don’t Want to Wait,” of the “Dawson’s Creek” fame and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?,” according to Spin.
Haim, a band made up of three sisters Danielle Haim, typically on guitar, Alana Haim, and Este Haim, has been pretty quiet in recent years. The women made headlines recently when they channeled the late Lou Reed with their new track “Summer Girl.” According to mxdwn, they debuted the track live during a show at the Teragram Ballroom in their hometown of Los Angeles but it was the first new music they had released in nearly two years.
The covers of the classic Cole songs, both from the 1996 album This Fire, stick pretty close to the originals. The sisters do a fantastic job of channeling Cole’s smokey, sultry, voice in “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?,” and, “I Don’t Want to Wait” sounds just like the original. It is guaranteed to bring back the feelings you had screaming the chorus at the TV before settling in to watch some good old fashioned late 90s, early 2000s, melodrama.
Both covers were done by the sisters only using the piano, guitars, and drum machine and while they both channel Cole perfectly, the sisters did breathe new life into both hits with their talent.
The sisters are no strangers to covering hits from the late 90s, as Spin reported that shortly after their 2017 sophomore album, they performed an incredible rendition of the classic Shania Twain track “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” The woman have so much love for Twain that Spin reported that Este Haim once said “That’s one of the boxes that you have to tick if you want to date any of us. You have to be a Shania Twain fan.”
Though they have not said anything to that effect about Cole, the love the sisters share for her musical talent shined through every part of their performance during the Pitchfork Music Festival.
