Big Sean is wasting no time getting back into the groove of things after taking a few years off of music. Earlier this week he dropped “Overtime,” his first single since 2017 and only a few days after he released “Single Again,” according to Consequence of Sound. The heartbreaking single features Jhené Aiko and Ty Dolla $ign and is not the first time Aiko and Big Sean have collabed.
As reported by a mxdwn article, Aiko has worked quite a bit with Big Sean in the past years. He was featured on her debut LP in 2014 Souled Out and her 2017 album TRIP. The reasons for the frequent collabs might be that the two had been dating for quite some time, however with the release of “Overtime” and “Single Again,” it’s safe to say the two have split. The split has been confirmed by sources such as MTV and Rolling Stone.
“Overtime” has been described as “lovelorn” and “Single Again” is more straightforward in the message it is trying to get across. The lyrics paint a picture of self reflection that comes after a breakup. The chorus is relatable to anyone who has ever been through a breakup that they felt was more of an “it’s not you, it’s me” situation.
“I’m single again (Single again)/ Told her we’ll be better off friends / Maybe I should just focus on me (On me)/ And slow down, don’t rush romance/ I’m single again (Single again)/ Told ’em that we better off friends (Off friends)/ Blaming you is just so easy/ But maybe the problem’s me/ I’m single again (Single again)/ Guess that’s just the way it’s gon’ be (Gon’ be)/ Maybe I should spend this time on me (On me)/ Maybe I should spend this cash on me (On me)”
Breaking up to focus on mental health and to practice self care is a common theme throughout “Single Again” and honestly it’s an important message to spread. It’s refreshing to hear a breakup song that isn’t bitter or blaming the other person and it is super telling that Aiko was even willing to be featured on the song. Sometimes things just don’t work out and “Single Again” perfectly encaptures that feeling.
