Tegan and Sara Get Nostalgic On New Song “I’ll Be Back Someday”

Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara have released a new song called “I’ll Be Back Someday”. The song is the first single to their upcoming ninth studio album, Hey, I’m Just Like You. “I’ll Be Back Someday”, and every other song on the upcoming album, are based on the pair’s first songs together. In doing research for their upcoming memoir, they stumbled upon two cassette tapes with these songs and decided to rework them for Hey, I’m Just Like You.

“I’ll Be Back Someday” subverts the expectations that most would have for a Tegan and Sara song. While the group’s same indie pop and folk sensibilities are still present, in this song, it’s to a much lesser degree. Tegan and Sara opt for a more pop punk direction on this cut. In the first moments, the guitar tone immediately stood out as different from their usual output, and wouldn’t be out of place on a Blink-182 song. The rowdy and very chant-able chorus shares the same energy. As they sing, “I run, run, run, run, run away / Get, get, get, get, get away”, snares hit on each words, and electric guitar shredding fills the background.

Tegan and Sara recently announced their fall 2019 tour in support of the new album and memoir. The album will be available on September 27th via Sire Records (WMG), and the memoir will be available on September 24th in hardcover, ebook, and audio book formats.

Matthew Jordan: I grew up in Massachusetts, but I am currently a student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. I picked up my first musical instrument (viola) in the 3rd grade, and have been a fan of everything the medium has to offer ever since. Some of my favorite artists right now include Matt Maltese, Idles, MIKE, Benny the Butcher, Standing on the Corner, Built to Spill, and Frank Ocean. I also love following the charts and the music business to see what is connecting with listeners and why.
