808 State Announces First New Album in Nearly 17 Years Transmission Suite for October 2019 Release

English electronic band 808 State has just announced their first album in almost 17 years. Transmission Suite, their seventh studio album, will be released on October 11th. Their previous album, Outpost Transmission, was released to positive reviews in 2002. While Transmission Suite will be the band’s first album in 17 years, their most recent release is actually Initial Granada Report, their EP that was released this month. 808 State released a single, titled “Tokyo Tokyo”, along with a music video in the announcement of the upcoming album.

Director Michael England starts the music video with a few quick shots of plaster roof tiles and appliances.  He leans into a woozy and dirty aesthetic with the disorienting camera movement and heavy film grain. What comes after this is mostly a mixture of grainy footage of life in Tokyo, cut with clear, gliding shots of computer and music equipment. On a few different occasions, the camera lingers on a specific piece of equipment. One particularly notable instance of this is an almost still shot that focuses on the iconic Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer. Given 808 State’s musical style and love for electronics (and the name of the group), this could be a homage to their genre and the equipment that helps them create their art. The video concludes with an overhead look at the entire room full of equipment.

Matthew Jordan: I grew up in Massachusetts, but I am currently a student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. I picked up my first musical instrument (viola) in the 3rd grade, and have been a fan of everything the medium has to offer ever since. Some of my favorite artists right now include Matt Maltese, Idles, MIKE, Benny the Butcher, Standing on the Corner, Built to Spill, and Frank Ocean. I also love following the charts and the music business to see what is connecting with listeners and why.
